The national rate of imprisonment decreased by 6.3%, from 214.4 prisoners per 100,000 adults in June 2021 to 200.9 in June 2022. The Northern Territory has the highest imprisonment rate in Australia, at 1,026.6 prisoners per 100,000 adults.
NSW Custody Statistics: Quarterly update December 2022
New figures released today by the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research (BOCSAR) show the NSW prison population in December 2022 was 12,247, a slight increase of 79 people from December 2021 (or up 0.6%).
Since the peak of 8,101 in 2019, the prison population decreased by 18.9% to 6,569 in 2022. This decline has come amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
QCS operates eleven high security and six low security correctional centres, as well as 35 probation and parole district offices and over 140 reporting locations across the State.
Across Victoria, there are 11 publicly operated prisons, three privately operated prisons (Fulham Correctional Centre, Port Phillip Prison and Ravenhall Correctional Centre) and one transition centre, Judy Lazarus Transition Centre.
Clarence Correctional Centre is a minimum- and maximum-security prison for men and women located near Grafton, New South Wales, Australia. It holds inmates sentenced under State or Australian criminal law. It has 1,700 beds, making it the largest prison in Australia.
There were two major convict colonies: New South Wales (1788-1840) and Van Diemen's Land (later Tasmania, 1803-1853). Eventually, Swan River (Western Australia) would become a third penal colony when the failing settlement requested an injection of convict labourers (1850-1868).

The court decides on the sentence's length based on the crime's severity and other factors, such as prior criminal history and mental health issues. A life prison term can range from 10 years (in some cases) up to 25 years or even life without parole (in more extreme cases).
There are nine privately managed prisons in Australia as of December 2020, with one of these — the Southern Queensland Correctional Centre — to return to state management in mid-2021.

The two Best States for corrections are New Hampshire and Maine , which both also rank in the top three for safety. New Hampshire also ranks in the top 10 overall, as do Massachusetts and Utah , the fourth and fifth Best States for corrections, respectively.
Russia, Black Dolphin Prison
Russia is a country that's known for its brutal and rough prison system. You know it's borderline bad when it gets its reputation for one of being the worst prisons in the world. Black Dolphin is near the Kazakhstan border and it houses the country's most hardened and dangerous criminals.
The states with the lowest percentage of the population in prison include: New York, New Jersey, Washington, Nebraska, Utah, North Dakota, New Hampshire, Minnesota and Massachusetts. Maine has the lowest percentage of population in prison at 0.16%.
STATE VARIATION
At the national level, including both state and federal imprisonment, 47 out of every 100,000 women were in prison in 2021. The state with the highest rate of female imprisonment is Idaho (127) and the state with the lowest incarceration rate of women is Massachusetts (6).
The penal system in China is composed of an administrative detention system and a judicial incarceration system. As of 2020, it is estimated that 1.7 million people had been incarcerated in China, which is the second-highest prison population after the United States.
Adults in Australia who commit or allegedly commit crimes are managed by the criminal justice system. There are 115 custodial correctional facilities across Australia (SCGRSP, 2021).

The latest figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics collating information from Corrective Services Australia for the September quarter, shows on average 205 people are being jailed every day which is down from 210 people per 100,000 adult population in June.
Initially established as Berrima Gaol, the facility closed in 1909 and reopened in 1949 as the Berrima Training Centre. The Centre is the oldest Australian correctional facility in operation.
Australian English observed the change from gaol to jail in the 1990s. Both forms are correct, but jail is used more often, and it is likely that gaol will become a thing of the past at some point. Berrima Gaol and Parramatta Gaol are now both called correctional centres, which is the new word for jail in Australia.
While imprisonment plays an important role in Australian society, the report finds that prisons are expensive. They cost Australian taxpayers more than $5 billion per year, or more than $330 per prisoner per day.
