Muzan is by far the most powerful character in Demon Slayer, heroic or otherwise. As the forefather of demonkind, his Biokinesis ability helps him metamorphose into limitless shapes and forms.
Tanjiro is not the strongest Demon Slayer. Yoriichi Tsugikuni was the strongest demon slayer . He was the inventor of Sun Breathing . He possessed Sun Breathing which is the strongest Breathing style of all the breathing styles.
Nezuko would be far stronger than Tanjiro in the base form in terms of pure physical abilities. But Tanjiro gained superhuman strength and speed owing to the activation of the Demon Slayer Mark. Comparing the two in these forms, Nezuko might still outperform in terms of speed and strength.
In conclusion, Tanjiro will not be able to kill Muzan by himself since the Demon King is far superior in every aspect of combat. The manga has shown fans the singular way that Muzan could be bested and it was only due to the collective efforts of Demon Slayer Corps members.
Tanjiro is certainly strong in his own right, and he's strong enough to defeat many of the characters in the series, whether they be demon or Demon Slayer. But he's also basically a newbie within the Demon Slayer Corps, so there are still plenty of characters still able to defeat him.

Tanjiro decapitates Akaza with the Hinokami Kagura: Setting Sun Transformation. Akaza was bewildered, wondering how Tanjiro did not have any fighting spirit, comparing this feeling to fighting against a plant. He acknowledges that Tanjiro surpassed his speed.
However, Tanjiro is not a descendant of Yoriichi Tsukiguni. Tanjiro is the descendant of someone who knew Yoriichi personally and was a good friend of his as well. Sumiyoshi was rescued by Yoriichi when a demon threatened his life. Since then Yoriichi often met him and they became close acquaintances.
To sum things up, Tanjiro died fighting Muzan and was revived within seconds due to the transfer of blood from the Demon King to Tanjiro. He turns into a Demon and Kanao injects a certain medicine made from Wisteria flowers that turns him back to a human.
Three Hashira Tanjiro never will beat in Demon Slayer
Even amongst his fellow Hashira, Giyu is unique in being the only one who develops a Breathing Style Form of his own. In this process alone, Giyu already sets himself apart from the other Hashira.
Muzan injects Tanjiro with all of his blood, turning him into a demon. Tanjiro begins to become immune to sunlight. Inosuke finds himself incapable of taking a strike at Tanjiro.
He, alongside Kyojuro Rengoku, Mitsuri Kanroji, and Gyomei Himejima, are the only four Demon Slayer heroes to be Pure Good. In addition to all three of the latter being Hashira, Tanjiro's the only Pure Good to be only be an average Demon Slayer and one of the main characters to be Pure Good.
