Elizabeth I (1533–1603)
No list of the best English queens is complete without Elizabeth I, who reigned between 1558 and 1603. Elizabeth was the daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, and had an unpromising start, being declared illegitimate following her mother's execution.
Legend has it she was so beautiful that Edward IV immediately fell in love with her. Elizabeth switched allegiances from Lancaster to York and was married to the King of England.
In 1464, Elizabeth Woodville married Edward IV to become England's queen consort. She was known as the White Queen because, during the War of the Roses, the House of York was represented by the symbol of a white rose, while the House of Lancaster was represented by a red rose.
In defying expectations that he had a duty to use marriage as a diplomatic tool, Edward prioritised love, perhaps lust, in a way that exposed his own feelings. There was no question that he desired Elizabeth and was prepared to take considerable risks to make her his queen.
