Ram ventilation - sharks swim constantly so that oxygen-rich water is continually rammed over their gills. Under most ocean conditions if they stop swimming they'll drown. Buccal pumping - sharks use their cheeks to pump water over their gills. This allows them to stop swimming without drowning.
Myth #1: Sharks Must Swim Constantly, or They Die
Some sharks must swim constantly in order to keep oxygen-rich water flowing over their gills, but others are able to pass water through their respiratory system by a pumping motion of their pharynx. This allows them to rest on the sea floor and still breathe.
Some sharks such as the nurse shark have spiracles that force water across their gills allowing for stationary rest. Sharks do not sleep like humans do, but instead have active and restful periods.
So, while most sharks will be 100% fine if they stop swimming, a few iconic species such as great white sharks, whale sharks, hammerheads and mako sharks would suffocate without forward motion or a strong current flowing towards their mouths.
Instead, these sharks rely on obligate ram ventilation, a way of breathing that requires sharks to swim with their mouths open. The faster they swim, the more water is pushed through their gills. If they stop swimming, they stop receiving oxygen. They move or die.
A shark's sense of smell is powerful – it allows them to find prey from hundreds of yards away. Menstrual blood in the water could be detected by a shark, just like any urine or other bodily fluids.
SHARKS AND ORCAS
There's evidence to suggest that orcas use tonic immobility to prey on sharks. In 1997, an Orca in the Farallon Islands was seen holding a White Shark upside down for 15 minutes. Whether intentional or not, the Orca likely caused the shark to enter tonic immobility. Defenceless, the shark, suffocated.
So, do sharks feel pain? Yes – but it is different to how we express pain . Sharks do not have the same nervous system as mammals but what we do have in common are neurons called nociceptors. These receptors are designed to detect potential harm – such as temperature and pressure.
If any of these species were to stop swimming because, for example, they were caught in a net, they would ultimately suffocate. Whatever method they use to breathe, sharks are able to engage in periods of deep rest while still but do not fall asleep in the traditional sense.
Pinnipeds (seals and sea lions) aren't the only marine mammals that have snacked on a shark. The sperm whale is a marine mammal that is considered an apex predator in certain habitats and it has been recorded as having eaten shark eggs.
Different sharks breathe in different ways, and this influences how they rest. Some species are thought to 'sleep swim', others lie stationary on the seafloor, and some snuggle up in groups or someplace out of sight where it's safe to rest such as in a cave or in the sand.
They react differently when external stimuli are applied while sleeping and while awake. But the bullfrog, Lithobates catesbeianus show the same reaction in both situations. This indicates that bullfrogs do not sleep. Lithobates catesbeianus is an animal that cannot sleep.
Large sharks prey on dolphins, they particularly target very young calves and sick adult dolphins as these are the weakest and most vulnerable individuals.
In return, sharks do not eat pilot fish because pilot fish eat their parasites. This is called a "mutualist" relationship. Small pilot fish are often seen swimming into the mouth of a shark to eat small pieces of food from the shark's teeth. Sailors even said that sharks and pilot fish act like close friends.
Low-Salt Habitat
Their ability to tolerate freshwater is rooted in salt retention. Sharks must retain salt inside their bodies. Without it, their cells will rupture and cause bloating and death. Given this requirement, most sharks cannot enter fresh water, because their internal salt levels would become diluted.
Skeleton & Buoyancy
All sharks are slightly negatively buoyant, which means they sink. Unlike many bony fishes, sharks do not have a swim bladder to provide buoyancy. To help compensate for their tendency to sink, their livers contain large amounts of oil that is less dense than seawater.

What does a shark attack feel like? While each survivor describes the experience differently, a common description from shark attack survivors is the attack feels similar to being punched or bumped. Some survivors have even recounted no pain at all!
Many animals, including turtles, rays and many species of sharks, can become vulnerable to harmful bacteria through human contact, leaving them susceptible to disease.
"If you start touching them around the snout, they can pick up your electro-receptions and they know you're possibly edible." He advises using "something hard - be it a camera, a stick, a rock" - to push the animal away.
Moving forward: Sharks are the only fish that can't swim backwards — and if you pull a shark backward by its tail, it will die.
