In 1991–1992 school year, Severus Snape used this counter-curse to counteract Quirinus Quirrell's broom jinx on Harry Potter's broomstick during a game of Quidditch.
Voldemort knows Snape was preventing Quirrell from killing Harry and from obtaining the stone. But he believed Snape when he told Snape that he didn't know that Quirrell was acting on Voldemort's orders and had he known he would have assisted Quirrell in the attempts.
Quirrell knew it was Severus who interfered with a counter-curse when he tried to throw Harry off the broomstick.
At that quidditch match, Quirrell jinxed his broom to try to knock Harry off and kill him - but Snape - whom was suspicous of Quirrell from the start - noticed and was muttering a counter - curse in order to save his life.
12. Snape's Last Words. In the [Deathly Hallows] book, Snape's dying words to Harry were "Look at me". Right then we did not realize the significance of his words but in the very next chapter when Harry goes through Snape's memories in the Pensieve, he comes to know how much Snape loved Lily.
Despite his attraction to the Dark Arts and Voldemort's ideology of wizard supremacy, Snape's love for Muggle-born Lily Evans, Harry's mother, eventually compelled him to defect from the Death Eaters. He then became a double agent for Albus Dumbledore and the Order of the Phoenix.

While through most of the series Snape seems to be horrible to Harry and possibly trying to get him into Voldemort's hands, it's revealed at the end of the series that Snape was actually helping watch out for Harry.
In order to preserve his position as a trusted Death Eater, Severus Snape was forced to tell Voldemort the true date at which the Order planned to move Harry, under the orders of Albus Dumbledore's portrait.
That worked because when Lily was killed, she had tried to protect Harry and therefore gave him the most powerful weapon against Voldemort; Love. Love is the one thing that Voldemort is unable to handle and therefore when Quirrell was touched by Harry he burnt him with love.
It should be noted that despite his fear of Voldemort and that he was not a Death Eater, Quirrell was one of Voldemort's only followers who referred to him by name, the others being Barty Crouch Jr. and Peter Pettigrew.
Snape did not need to tell Dumbledore about Quirell because he already knew. It was Dumbledore who told Snape to keep an eye on Quirell because the former already had his suspicions. Snape was not able to accumulate solid proof but otherwise Dumbledore was well in the loop.
To readers and fans of the films, Snape's backstory—that he was protecting Harry from Voldemort out of his never-ending love for Harry's mother, Lily—was not known until the seventh book and eighth movie.
7: Snape is able to fly
Being able to fly without the use of a flying object, however, is a bit tricky. Snape was able to do it though. While the movies show the Death Eaters seemingly flying as puffs of dark smoke, in the books it is only Voldemort who is referred to as being able to truly fly.
Harry's scar had hurt during Arrival Feast because of Quirrell's connection to Voldemort; Snape was then talking to Quirrell, allowing Voldemort, from the back of Quirrell's head, to sense Harry's presence.
He's surrounded by mystery over whether he's on the side of the Order of the Phoenix or Lord Voldemort. JK Rowling tweeted: Snape died for Harry out of love for Lily. Harry paid him tribute in forgiveness and gratitude.
We learn later that the doe was Severus Snape's Patronus. Carefully examining the text shows that Hermione had her beaded bag open when she told Harry where they had stopped. Phineas Nigellus's portrait inside it overheard Hermione and reported that to Snape.
Even though McGonagall is the Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher, she's unable to defeat the Potions master. It show's Snape's power. Yet not only does he refuse to fight back, he also seems to deliberately deflect one of McGonagall's spells into the path of two Death Eaters behind him.

It was Snape who overheard the prophecy that would go on to define Lord Voldemort and Harry Potter's lives for years afterwards. The prophecy can be seen as the catalyst for everything; it led to the death of Lily, his great love, and Snape spent the entire course of Harry's (and his own) life trying to make amends.
