Voldemort broke into the prison Nurmengard Castle, where Gellert Grindelwald was being held, and demanded to know the location of the Elder Wand. It was only during the confrontation in Grindelwald's cell that Voldemort learned Albus Dumbledore had claimed the wand in a duel decades back.

Even decades after the duel with his old friend (or even lover, depending on who you ask), Gellert Grindelwald still valued their past relationship. Voldemort was a bit of a personal rival for him since he was Dumbledore's enemy, and Grindelwald didn't want to help him.
Grindelwald was described as being a brilliant and ambitious individual. He was highly intelligent and his magical skills were comparable to those of Albus Dumbledore and Lord Voldemort. He was considered to be the most powerful Dark wizard of all time until the rise of Voldemort a generation later.
Dumbledore and Grindelwald took a blood oath to not fight each other. "Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald," the second film in the series, reveals that as teenagers Dumbledore and Grindelwald undertook a blood pact that wouldn't allow them to move against each other.
Grindelwald was infatuated with Dumbledore. Both ingenious wizards with somewhat extreme ambitions, the two became inspired to find the Deathly Hallows and lead a revolution that would destroy the International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy, allowing wizards to rise as benign worldly overlords.
It's easy to imagine Grindelwald pulling his punches a bit because he cared for the future Hogwarts headmaster. Voldemort did not care about anyone or anything but his own gain, which made him more ruthless but less in tune with what was happening around him.
According to records from the wizarding world, he is thought to have been among the most powerful wizards in human history. Merlin attended Hogwarts as a Slytherin and displayed a remarkable command of the magical arts. Some claim that he is the most potent wizard ever.
The name Gellert Grindelwald only appears in the archives later – in the first volume of the Harry Potter series where he is mentioned only briefly on the back of Albus Dumbledore's chocolate frog card.
The only one Grindelwald did seem to have genuine fear of appears to be Albus Dumbledore, as he quickly fled the scene after Ariana was killed trying to intervene in a duel he started, and later in life when he refrained from attacking England despite his possession of the Elder Wand out of fear of his former friend.
What made things interesting was that Grindelwald had refused to tell Voldemort where the Elder Wand was. He knew that Dumbledore was the current owner and he probably worked out that it remained with Dumbledore in his tomb.
Draco's refusal to reveal Harry's identity to Bellatrix was not because he liked him. It was because he believed that Harry was the only chance they had at defeating Voldemort. At first, Draco admired and revered Voldemort until he threatened his family's safety.
Gregorovitch didn't know it was Grindelwald that stole the Elder Wand from him so was unable to give the information to Voldemort.
It was said he felt remorse after a few years locked up, so he lied to Voldemort and knew enough occlumency to make Voldy believe him. As Dumbledore suggested, he lied so that Voldemort couldn't take over because he felt remorse, or as Harry suggested, he lied so Voldemort wouldn't open Dumbledore's tomb.

But Grindelwald has deep roots in the world of Harry Potter. He was one of the first wizards to look for tools for immortality that would eventually seduce Voldemort.
Voldemort intentionally made six Horcruxes, but when he used Avada Kedavra on Harry, he unintentionally created a seventh Horcrux. Instead of dying, Lily's love for Harry created a counter 'curse' known as Sacrificial Protection and saved Harry.

1. Couldn't Stand: Harry. At first, the reason Voldemort hated Harry was because of the prophecy. It foretold of a boy who was destined to defeat him.

Longtime fans of the series have been aware of Albus Dumbledore's friendship with Gellert Grindelwald since Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows was published in 2007, the same year author J.K. Rowling told a Carnegie Hall audience that Dumbledore's feelings for Grindelwald were more than platonic.
In the new clip from Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, Albus Dumbledore can be seen admitting to being in love with Grindelwald.
Speaking of his most recent release, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, in which he played Gellert Grindelwald, Mikkelsen admitted he'd had concerns about replacing Johnny Depp, who withdrew from the franchise due to his much-publicized court case with ex-wife Amber Heard.
Dumbledore takes Harry in as his favorite student, protects him, and shows faith in him and his abilities. He then sends Harry out to kill a dangerous wizard with very little preparation, all the while planning and expecting for Harry to meet his death.
