Cats are notorious for their indifference to humans: almost any owner will testify to how readily these animals ignore us when we call them. But a new study indicates domestic cats do recognize their own names—even if they walk away when they hear them.
The reason for the indifference of cats is believed to be rooted in the early domestication of the species. Writing in the journal Animal Cognition, the researchers said: “Historically speaking, cats, unlike dogs, have not been domesticated to obey humans' orders.
And when they're stressed, they're more likely to ignore you. Cats ignore people they're nervous around. They also ignore people when they're living in environments they deem volatile or uncomfortable. A perceived threat can cause a cat to withdraw into themselves and ignore the people around them.
In both of these cases, ignoring your cat's behavior will still leave them with that unmet need. They will continue to display whatever behavior they hope will get them what they need. A cat who hasn't had enough social interaction will continue to annoy you; a cat that is fearful will continue to hiss or swat.
All of the experts agreed that if your cat is hissing at you, then they're definitely upset. If a full-grown cat is hissing, it's a surefire sign they're unhappy and potentially feeling threatened. But Nagelschneider noted that hissing, growling, and swatting are all normal behaviors in kittens as they try to develop.
"Try to quickly establish a routine to not only bond with them but also to keep your cat healthy." That means a consistent daily schedule of meal time, play time, alone time (particularly, if you work outside of the home), and even time dedicated to brushing, if needed.
Sit quietly and wait until she comes to you. If she completely ignores you, make a soft kissy sound, but stay still. When kitty spots you, offer just an extended finger. Your huge body seems less intimidating.
There are many signs your cat loves you, including purring, sitting on and cuddling you, slow blinking, bringing you gifts, head bunting, and showing you their belly.
Why Are Some Cats Less Affectionate Than Others? Most of the time, this just comes down to individual personality differences. However, some cats might be less affectionate because they didn't have enough socialization with humans when they were young kittens.
Your cat wants alone time.
Cats are independent creatures and have their own emotions and moods. If your cat doesn't feel like getting scratched or coming for a treat, well, chances are, they're just simply going to ignore you and keep doing whatever it is they prefer to do, which may include napping.
Your cat may understand that you're angrily mooing at them based on your tone or other behavior, but they may not know why you're angry at them or what you're telling them to do. Your cat isn't listening to you because they don't understand what you are saying. It's really not any more complicated than that.
Some cats are naturally more cautious than others; startling easily at loud noises or sudden movements, quick to hide if anything changes or upsets them. Being picked up and held can make some cats nervous, as they are being restrained in your arms. This limits their options for escape if anything were to startle them.
This could include purring, rubbing against you, and even kneading you with their paws. Cats may follow you around the house or even outside if they miss you. This is their way of trying to get your attention and be near you. Furry friends may also sleep in your spot as if they are trying to take your place.
Cats cannot distinguish their owners by staring at them because their faces appear identical when they are at rest. Instead, cats distinguish between humans using sound and smell. Cats learn to identify their owner's voice, and regardless of whether they're wearing cologne, their skin emits a distinct aroma.
Do cats remember people? Cats possess excellent long-term memories. They can recall their animal companions and the people who feed them as well as those who irritate them. Memory is what allows a cat to leap into the arms of a family member returning after a semester away at college.
Communication with your cat is key
That communication style may not include physical touch—being a cat's favorite person doesn't necessarily mean they want you to pet. A cat's favorite person may be the one who makes them feel comfortable and safe just by being in the same room with them.
All in all, even the most aloof and brooding cat will be able to pick up on your warmth and devotion. Whether they choose to admit it or not, they can sense when a person loves them (and hates them). So always make sure you're emitting good, kitty-positive vibes, and your cat will be sure to indulge in the lovefest.
Signs of a Depressed Cat
Changes in body language, including ears held back, tucked tail, and hairs standing on end. Meowing more or less than usual or making low-pitched, mournful meows. Lack of energy or a decrease in activity level.
Your kitty makes a show of sitting with his back to you, ignoring you? He may lick his paw or just stare ahead into nothingness. If this sounds familiar, it means that your cat is giving you the silent treatment. Cats can show their discontent in many different ways.
Say your cat's name and, if they look at you, say 'yes' in a positive, happy voice and quickly give them a bit of food (ideally within two seconds of them looking at you). 3. If they break their gaze, repeat step two again to further reinforce that positive association with their name.
Kittens sleep in litters, so by sleeping with you your cat is showing affection and creating a deeper bond with you. In addition, cats are territorial. By sharing your bed, your feline bestie is saying “you're my person.” Knowing you're wanted and needed makes for a good night's sleep.
Some cats will take longer, while some cats will take virtually no time at all. All you have to do is respect and accept your kitty for who she is, go at her pace, don't force anything, and remain calm and patient. In her own time, she'll come around and your bonding process will be complete.
