Like the rest of his kin, Maul was subjected, shortly after birth, to an initiation ritual during which he was immersed in a "magic" oily bath, and covered head to toe in black and red tattoos. Later stripped of his black Nightbrother markings, Maul was left solely red-skinned.
Anointed by his Sith Master as Darth Maul, the Dathomirian was raised to hate the Jedi Knights that served the light side of the Force. Desiring to see the Jedi Order fall, Darth Maul trained for the day when the Sith would exact revenge on their ancient foes.
The planet, bathed in blood-red light by its sun Domir, had numerous continents that were overrun with vegetation, forests, and swamplands.
Their last lightsaber duel ended when the Jedi Master struck down Darth Maul. Darth Maul is instantly recognizable with his red and black face paint and tattoos, and his red and yellow eyes.
Like his master, Darth Sidious, better known as Sheev Palpatine, Maul's main weakness was his overconfidence. In Luke Skywalker's confrontation with Palpatine during The Return of the Jedi, he tells the Emperor that his overconfidence is his weakness.
9 Darth Maul
The Dathomirian Sith Lord is without a doubt one of the best Sith in Star Wars history.
He ignites his new double-bladed lightsaber and engages Obi-Wan in a duel, but Obi-Wan again bests him in combat, cutting off his opponent's horns. Maul is killed by a blaster bolt to the head from Owen Lars. Obi-Wan thanks Owen, and says he will take Maul's body into the desert and burn it.
Darth Maul feared Vader in the same way as anyone would. Vader was the most notorious and ruthless figure in the Empire, using his rage and anguish to fuel his resolve, enabling him to dispatch his enemies without compassion or remorse.
Other Sith do not bother hiding their eye color. An example of this is Darth Maul and his brother Savage Opress. Since they are not as calculating as Darth Sidious, they do not conceal their vileness. They also probably possess more pure anger than any Sith in Star Wars.
When the other artists took over his design, though, they assumed that he meant for those feathers to be horns and that's what they drew. The horn idea obviously was liked by everyone and that's how Darth Maul's famous horned look came to be!
In the construction of a Sith lightsaber, individuals partook in a process known as bleeding. By ways of the Force, they would pour negative emotions, such as rage, hate, fear, and pain into kyber crystals. The process would result in the crystals gaining a distinctive crimson or red hue.
Several foreign-language editions of Son of Dathomir have been published with the Star Wars Legends banner, indicating that the comic series applies to the Legends continuity in addition to the official Star Wars canon.
Outcome. For other uses, see Mission to Dathomir. In 14 BBY, Jedi Padawan Cal Kestis undertook a mission to the planet Dathomir in search for the Tomb of Kujet and an astrium contained within. The mission spanned over three visits to the planet by Kestis and his crew.
In fact, in this same scene, Sidious says he is keeping Maul alive because he has "other uses for you!" If Palpatine thought Maul knew he about his double identity, there's no way he would have let him stay alive.
"Is it the Chosen One?" Maul asked. "He is," Kenobi replied. Maul looked up, the life fading from his eyes, and uttered his last words. "He will avenge us."
After his failure on Naboo, Maul was left for dead by Sidious. Maul realized that his Master never intended for him to see his plan through, and he was just a tool to be disposed of. Thus, Maul's rage doubled — he hated the Sith now as much as he hated Kenobi and the Jedi who ruined his life.
Why didn't Snoke have yellow eyes? Because he wasn't a Sith, he was a strand-cast created by a Sith to corrupt young Jedi such as Ben Solo. Kylo Ren wasn't a Sith, he was a practitioner of the Dark Side, Snoke wasn't a Sith because he was a body used by Palpatine to be present elsewhere in the galaxy.
Really, the yellow eyes of the Sith show the physical toll the dark side issues on its 'host' if you can call it so. It represents the dark power within them, the unchecked and even unbalanced rage swirling through their body. Kylo Ren was never fully immersed in the dark side, as was evident throughout the movie.
It didn't really become a pattern until Anakin completed his turn to the dark side. Anakin's eyes go back and forth over the course of Revenge of the Sith. When he's slaughtering separatists on Mustafar, they're Sith yellow, but when he's dueling with Obi-Wan, they've gone back to normal.
And while his warnings don't work, at the very least, it shows that Maul became aware of Anakin and what he would soon become. With the rise of the Empire, it's likely Maul caught on to Vader's existence pretty quickly.
In the end, Darth Vader's inner hatred and darkness made him the winner of the epic battle against Darth Maul. But, of course, the comic isn't canon, and the meeting never happened in the actual Star Wars Universe.
Conclusion. Since that unfortunate day on Naboo, Maul hated Obi-Wan for sending him into a life of suffering and disappointment. Maul spent years plotting his revenge and was able to get a portion of it by killing Duchess Satine in front of Obi-Wan.
Windu counters that Sidious is too dangerous to be kept alive and prepares to summarily execute him. However, Anakin intervenes on Sidious' behalf, disarming Windu by severing his right hand. Sidious kills Windu with a blast of Force lightning, sending him falling to his death out of his office's window.
As the son of Mother Talzin, the Zabrak male was taken from a young age by Sidious to act as his impressionable apprentice. The boy was raised as Darth Maul, a name he carried throughout his life. In Legends, it was insinuated that he was born "Maul" before attaining the honor of the "Darth" title.
In the show, we see that, through sheer hatred, willpower, and a mastery of the Force, Maul (voiced by Witwer) manages to keep himself alive after the fight with Kenobi on Naboo — and to grab hold of an air vent as he tumbles down the shaft he fell into.
