Many native plants are not tolerant of high levels of phosphorus. Phosphorus-sensitive plants such as waratahs, banksias, grevilleas and others should be fed with a specially formulated native plant fertiliser such as Neutrog Bush Tucker.
Are Seasol and PowerFeed safe to use on Australian Natives? Yes, because Seasol is virtually phosphorous-free it is safe to use on phosphorous sensitive native plants. You can use it on every type of plant in the garden.
Important note: Dynamic Lifter should not be used on Australian native plants that are sensitive to phosphorus.
Excessive use of this product (or indeed any fertiliser) will have an impact on the soil and so the quality of your lawn. Dynamic Lifter Green Keeper's Choice, which is a mixture of Dynamic Lifter and a fortified lawn food, and Scott's Lawn Builder, which is a slow release fertiliser, are good all purpose lawn foods.
Yates Dynamic Lifter Soil Improver & Plant Fertiliser is ideal to use on all garden plants. Always water well after application.
Watering Young grevilleas in well-drained soil enjoy regular watering. Seasol and Seasol Super Soil Wetter & Conditioner are beneficial during plant establishment; when it is dry or during other periods of stress. Mulch plants to keep the roots cool and retain soil moisture.
But they do like to be fed, ideally in spring and autumn, either with a specifically designed Australian native plant food or an organic based fertiliser such as blood and bone or pelletised chicken manure.
To make a homemade fertiliser for native plants, DIY organic mulch or compost is best. You can create homemade mulch from low-phosphorus organic matter such as pine bark or blood meal, or use manure compost or clippings from street trees.
Brunnings Blood and Bone Fertiliser is a traditional organic fertiliser that is suitable for all types of plants, including Australian natives, garden beds, fruit, vegetables, roses and flowers. It is an organic product which will not burn plants as it releases the nutrients slowly.
Soil Preparation
They need well draining soil. Prepare you soil by mixing in some low-phosphorus fertiliser such as blood and bone. If planting in a pot use a good quality potting mix designed specifically for growing natives.
Fertilising Grevilleas
Only use organic fertilisers which state on the label they are safe for natives or that contain no more than 2% phosphorus. OCP eco-aminogro is suitable for all natives including grevilleas. It contains only 0.4% phosphorus and encourages growth and health in plants.
It provides complete plant nutrition with slow release organic nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium for better root growth, stronger plants and more flowers and fruit.
Apply Seasol regularly for several months before any fertilising is done. Once the tree is starting to respond to the Seasol treatment, apply an organic fertiliser such as Dynamic Lifter, blood and bone or slow-release tree tablets. Note: Sadly, some trees will be damaged beyond repair.
You can apply Dynamic Lifter Organic Plant Food every 6 - 8 weeks.
Best Mulch For Native Plants
Wood chip mulch, especially recycled bark, eucalyptus mulch and pine bark mulch, is the best mulch for natives, promoting microorganism activity and enhancing nutrients in the soil.
This makes it great as a general purpose soil conditioner; and great for phosphorous-sensitive native plants when it's well rotted. Horse manure tends to provide a step up in nutrient levels because these animals are often fed supplements. This makes it a great tonic for vegetable and flowerbeds.
Cow and sheep manure tends to have a low level of nutrients because these animals graze on grass. This makes it a terrific general purpose soil conditioner that can be used throughout the garden and, once composted will even suit Australian natives that are sensitive to phosphorous.
It is called Yates Dynamic Lifter Liquid Concentrate. It can be applied at the lowest rate, 1/2 capful per 9 litres of water every 2 weeks while the plant is actively growing. It is still autumn, so the plants will enjoying receiving the nutrients before winter sets in.
Do not apply Seasol and PowerFeed during the heat of the day. As PowerFeed is a fertiliser it may burn the foliage of the plant or lawn. If fungal problems are an issue, it is best to apply Seasol and PowerFeed in the morning to avoid moisture residue on the foliage overnight.
You can't overdose on Seasol. It's not a Fertiliser.
Yates 7kg Dynamic Lifter is used to gently feed all types of garden and potted plants, including Australian native plants. It releases nutrients slowly, improving the structure and moisture retention of the soil as well as encouraging earthworms and beneficial soil micro-organisms.
Dynamic Lifter can be better than using straight chicken manure, especially raw manure which can release too much of the nitrogen compound ammonia. Not only does ammonia burn your grass, but it smells bad and can be difficult to apply in the right quantities without a mechanical spreader.
The great thing about Dynamic Lifter pellets is that they are so gentle they won't burn the roots even if it is dry at the time you spread them.
