Many unis offer Early Entry pathways that do not have a minimum ATAR requirement, which means you can get into your dream university based on your Year 11 grades! Learn more about applying for early entry here!
Although Year 11 results do not inform any part of your child's ATAR, these results are becoming increasingly more important to form conditional offers or early entry offers at some universities. On a different note, Year 11 will be the chance for your child to try new and adventurous approaches to their studies.
There are eight universities that offer early entry pathways and do not have a minimum ATAR requirement. This means that you can be accepted into university purely based on your Year 11 performance!
Your results in Year 11, plus an extracurriculars you've done will be used to assess your eligibility for early entry. You'll still need to finish Year 12 and get an ATAR, but that number won't matter!
When you complete your VCE, your ATAR will be calculated using your Year 12 internal and external assessments. So, your Year 11 marks won't affect your ATAR score! But, Year 11 is still super important because you will need to complete Units 1 and 2 in Year 11 before progressing to Units 3 and 4 in Year 12.
Year 11. In Year 11 your child will be expected to work harder and be more proactive in their study. It's a big step up from Year 10.
If you did well in Year 11, and you have a good idea of what you want to do after high school, early entry schemes are a great shout. You can submit your preferences, and get an offer for your dream course at uni before everyone else has even thought about getting their act together.
The ATAR is a number from 0 and 99.95 in intervals of 0.05. The highest rank is 99.95, the next highest 99.90, and so on. The lowest automatically reported rank is 30.00, with ranks below 30.00 being reported as 'less than 30'. Find out more about how ATARs are calculated.
School-leavers should have a minimum ATAR of 70 to enter a teaching degree, while the status of the profession needs to be “massively upgraded” to improve stagnating student performance, a NSW parliamentary inquiry has found.
In NSW in 2020, the aggregate required for an 85 ATAR was just above 340. This corresponds to an average scaled score per unit of 34 across 10 units (including two English units).
The average ATAR usually sits at around 70.00. Why is this? Although an ATAR of 70 places a student in the top 70% of year 12 students overall, it only places them in the top 50% of students who get an ATAR (since certain students will not finish their year 12 studies).
Is year 12 content much more difficult than year 11? To be completely honest, the really overwhelming and difficult part of year 12 tends to be the pressure and the intensity of the study that you might come up against. The difference between the difficulty of the actual content is going to vary between subjects.
HD. High Distinction: An outstanding performance; mark range 85-100. Indicates that the student has produced outstanding work, and has demonstrated a high level of understanding across the entire content of the course.
D – Distinction
This grade is typically allotted to students who receive between 75% and 84%. It means that you have fulfilled the learning requirements and have conveyed a high-level understanding of the course materials.
These policies may vary also according to the degree year (higher percentages for later years), but generally, only 2–5% of students who pass (that is, who achieve raw marks of 50 or more) may be awarded a High Distinction grade, and 50% or more of passing students are awarded a basic Pass grade.
The grade N (grade), may be used to indicate that one or more course requirements (e.g., course report) have not been completed.
Year 11 students receive a substantially higher workload. This means that students will need to do a significant amount of homework each night. Most students do at least 3 hours of study per day. Conscientious students will do at least 3 hours study per evening.
Junior year is often full of stressful academic experiences. SAT's, the desire to get good grades and the college application process make junior and senior years arguably the most difficult of high school.
Year 11 does matter. As stated before, marks do not carry onto year 12, but knowledge that is assumed does. For some subjects such as chemistry, maths, economics and physics there will be assumed knowledge in the Year 12 content.
