The blind-hem stitch is primarily used for hemming curtains, trousers, skirts, etc. Directions: 1. First finish the raw edge.
Slip stitch:
Like most hand sewing techniques this stitch is normally used for hemming garments or finishing folded edges.
The simplest of hems is the double-turn hem, which you can use on almost any edge where you want an easy, clean finish. Every athlete knows it all comes down to the finish. It's the same with sewing – just not as sweaty.
If you don't have a sewing machine, no worries. Hand sewing a hem is simple and won't take up too much time. Just a needle and thread will give you the same perfectly hemmed pair of pants. Cut a matching piece of thread that's double the length to go around one leg.
Hem should be to the top of our shoe heel parallel to the floor. CLICK HERE for more on how to properly hem your pants.
Wash Your Denim Before Altering to Avoid Shrinking
Before taking a new pair of jeans for alterations, you should wash them a couple of times first. To wash jeans, turn them inside out and launder them in cold water on the delicate setting of your machine, then leave them to hang dry.
The running stitch is the most basic and most commonly used stitch, in which the needle and thread simply pass over and under two pieces of fabric.
Use a sharp pair of fabric scissors and slowly cut along one of the chalk lines you drew. Cut through one leg at a time, as trying to cut through both legs at once will make it harder to get a perfectly straight line. Do not attempt to use dull scissors to cut denim. You'll end up with a jagged, messy-looking hem.
The waist of the trouser should sit comfortably on your natural waist, not your hips. Jeans are often cut to sit lower on the hips with a natural “sag” effect, but not trousers. This is why men who don't often wear trousers feel that they are sitting uncomfortably high.
Ankle pants should, as you might have guessed, hit right at or above your ankle. Too long and you're no longer wearing ankle pants.
You have the perfect pair of pants for the occasion, but they are too long for you. Thankfully, you only need to take a quick drive to the drugstore to solve this at a moment's notice. One of the fastest ways to hem your pants is using a fashion hem tape that's available either on Amazon or from your local drugstore.
