The best way to determine if a dog still has puppies inside her is to x-ray her abdomen. Sometimes, it is possible to palpate and feel the presence of pups, but occasionally a pup may be within the birth canal and be missed using this method.
Abnormal vaginal discharge (brown, green, black, or pus-colored) at any time during pregnancy, abdominal pain, and fever are all potential signs of miscarriage or infection. Additionally, some pets experiencing a miscarriage will have contractions and deliver stillborn puppies.
Puppies' position.
If the puppy is sideways or bottom first, they become stuck. Developmental defects that result in enlargement of certain body parts can make birth difficult. Death of the puppy in utero can result in abnormal positioning and can affect uterine contractions.
Puppies can live in the uterus for up to 24 hours after labor starts. Dogs in labor for 3 hours without delivery of the first pup should be examined for evidence of complications. If you are comfortable with this, you may don a glove and do a vaginal examination to assess position of the puppy.
How Long Does It Take for Dogs to Give Birth? There are three stages of dog labor. Contractions in the first stage can last up to 12 hours. Puppies are usually born 30–60 minutes apart, but the mother dog may take a break between puppies that can last up to two hours.
The first puppy often takes the longest to be born; if contractions are weak it might take between two-four hours, but if contractions are strong, they should come within 20-30 minutes. There will be a time gap between each puppy, which can range from five minutes to 1.5 hours.
Your Dog Should Not Go More Than 4 Hours Between Puppies
Normally we say that a dog that is having puppies should not go more than a few hours without passing the next puppy.
Dog labour complications
Dystocia requires emergency veterinary treatment. You should contact your vet or, out of hours, your nearest Vets Now, if your dog's labour lasts more than 24 hours, or if more than two hours pass in between puppies.

If there are no puppies within a few hours it is best to see your vet. They can make sure that your dog has had all their puppies or if any are stuck. They can help them deliver these puppies or do a c-section.
How many times should a dog mate to get pregnant? Although a dog can get pregnant from one mating, most stud dog owners will recommend the dogs mate two (or even three times), usually 24 – 48 hours apart each time, but this may depend on whether a tie or a slip mating has been achieved.
The first puppy should be delivered within 1 to 2 hours of the onset of contractions and straining. Veterinary assistance is strongly encouraged if the first puppy is not delivered within 2 hours after the onset of contractions.
When the pregnant dog is ready to deliver her first puppy, she will typically strain, or push, for about 10-30 minutes before the puppy emerges. As each newborn puppy emerges from the birth canal, you will see that it is covered with a membrane that must be removed in order for the puppy to breathe.
In most cases the pup will be delivered within an hour of the presentation of the "water sac," since it is an indication that the pup(s) is in the pelvic canal.
Signs a dog is actively dying include labored breathing, an inability to control their bowels or bladder, a refusal to eat, and a lack of reaction to stimuli. Slow movements, a change in appetite, increased sleep, and a decrease in social behavior could be signs that your dog is just aging normally (and not dying).
At the very end of the pregnancy, you might even be able to see or feel the puppies moving around inside the mother. By this time, you want to prepare yourself and your dog for whelping, or puppy birthing.
The most telling sign that there is still placenta retained in the mother is the presence of greenish or dark discharge from the vaginal canal that continues for 24 hours or more after giving birth.
Please note that mother dogs may accidentally crush them, to prevent this it's important to have a whelping box with "pig rails." If you do not have rails in the whelping box, you may need to stick by the whelping box when they are nursing to make sure they are not smothered and that she doesn't harm them in any way.
If your dog is lying or sitting away from the litter for long periods, it's likely she may have rejected them. She may also show signs of stress and in some cases may physically pick up and move the puppies away from her. Another clear sign of potential rejection is if you hear excessive cries from the litter.
Some female dogs will accidentally harm their puppies because they are either lazy or careless. Large breed dogs will sometimes lie on puppies, smothering or crushing them.
If timing wasn't done, most dogs will whelp 63 days plus or minus 5 days from breeding (between 58 and 68 days). If your dog goes more than 68 days past breeding dates, a veterinarian should be consulted.
You should contact your veterinarian if your dog's labor takes more than 24 hours, or if more than 2 hours pass in between puppies.
Newborn puppies sleep about 22 hours a day, so they're really not going to be experiencing much. They also cannot walk. They will try crawling around just a bit however they won't move far from mother at all. When not sleeping, a newborn will be eating.
The 3-3-3 rule represents the phases of a rescue dog or common milestones your new dog or puppy will go through 3 days, 3 weeks, 3 months after being adopted from a shelter. Your new dog will have unfamiliar surroundings and go through an adjustment period while settling into his new home.
When dogs don't feel able to move away – which they may not when in physical contact with us – they may resort to telling us to back off in less desirable ways. Give dogs a way of “opting in” to social contact by using the “3-second rule” of petting. Pet for no more than three seconds, then stop.
Bring your puppy to the potty pad whenever you suspect it's time. But if he doesn't go, don't let him run around and play. Instead, put him back in his crate for 10-15 minutes, then immediately try again. Repeat until he does his business.
