Qantas named world's safest airline
Qantas has once again been named the world's safest airline for 2023, after losing the top spot last year. A typical presence at the top of the list, Qantas last year was just edged out by Air New Zealand.
Over its 97-year history Qantas has amassed an amazing record of firsts in safety and operations and is widely regarded as the world's safest airline since it hasn't suffered any accidents in the modern jet era.
Qantas has been named the world's safest airline for the year. AirlineRatings.com has revealed its top 20 safest airlines for 2023, with the Australian carrier nabbing the top spot and two UAE airlines making the top 10, out of 385 carriers across the globe.
It's not the first time that Qantas has won: The 100-year-old Australian carrier was named the world's safest airline from 2014 to 2017. In 2018, it was in the top 20 when AirlineRatings awarded 20 airlines jointly. Then it won again for three years in a row: 2019, 2020 and 2021.
Qantas has reason to celebrate after a horror few years after being named the world's safest airline for 2023. The Australian airline has regained AirlineRatings.com's top spot for safety, beating last year's winner Air New Zealand by “the finest of margins”.
While Qantas has never had a fatal jet airliner accident, the Australian national airline suffered losses in its early days before the widespread adoption of jets in civilian aviation. These were mainly biplanes or flying boats servicing routes in Queensland and New Guinea.
The most fatalities in any aviation accident in history occurred during 1977 in the Tenerife airport disaster, when 583 people were killed when two Boeing 747s collided on a runway.

Qantas was the lead airline with real-time monitoring of its engines across its fleet using satellite communications, which has enabled the airline to detect problems before they become a major safety issue.

Australia's national carrier regained its position as the airline rated the safest in the world in AirlineRatings.com's 2023 list. Its no-frills sister airline, Jetstar, also made the list of world's safest low-cost airlines.
However, the Anglo-French Concorde with 11.36 percent fatal crashes per million departures has appeared on top of the 'least safe plane' lists.
Flying is still considered to be the safest way to travel, but accidents can happen. Roughly, there are between 70-90 plane crashes per year worldwide, including both commercial planes and privately-owned ones.
"Accidents are rare in aviation. There were five fatal accidents among 32.2 million flights in 2022," Willie Walsh, director general of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), said in a statement. "That tells us that flying is among the safest activities in which a person can engage."
On the evening of August 7, 2020, Air India Express Flight 1344 crashed with 190 people on board during a botched landing attempt at Kozhikode Calicut International Airport. Eighteen people were killed in the Air India crash and more than 150 others sustained injuries.
Trans Australia Airlines Flight 538 and the 1950 Australian National Airways Douglas DC-4 crash, with 29 fatalities each, remain Australia's worst civil air accidents and second-worst air accidents.
Qantas. The third oldest airline in the world, Qantas was cited in 1988 film Rain Man as an airline to have never had an aircraft crash.
Indeed, one aircraft was shot down. In 1951, a de Havilland australia DHA-3 Drover crashed off the coast of New Guinea after the centre engine's propeller failed. The pilot and all six passengers were killed. Qantas has not since had a fatal accident, and only a handful incidents of note.
