In Buddhism, there is believed to be defilements, or “earthly desires” that humans experience. There is said to be 108 of these vices that we go through during our time on earth. These include experiences like arrogance, obsession, and violence. Each human experiences these earthly desires as a means to enlightenment.
In Japan, at the end of the year, a bell is chimed 108 times in Buddhist temples to finish the old year and welcome the new one. Each ring represents one of 108 earthly temptations (Bonnō) a person must overcome to achieve nirvana.
The 108 defilements of our minds
In Mahayana and Theravada Buddhism the use of Mala Beads consisting of 108 small wooden balls represents the impurities or defilements of our minds and are traditional used to count the number breaths while meditating or to keep count of the repetition of a mantra.
In yoga, the number 108 refers to spiritual completion. It is why japa malas are composed of 108 beads, why pranayama is often completed in cycles of 108, and why sun salutations are often performed in nine rounds of the 12 postures (totaling 108).
Psalm 108 1
My heart is steadfast, O God; I will sing and make music with all my soul. Awake, harp and lyre! I will awaken the dawn. I will praise you, O LORD, among the nations; I will sing of you among the peoples.
Sanskrit alphabet: There are 54 letters in the Sanskrit alphabet. Each has masculine and feminine, Shiva and Shakti. So, 54 multiplied by 2 is 108. Heart chakra: The chakras are the intersections of energy lines, and there are said to be a total of 108 energy lines converging to form the heart chakra.
The average distance between the Earth and the Sun is 108 times the sun's diameter. The average distance from the Earth to the Moon is 238,800 miles, about 108 times the moons diameter. This makes it so the moon appears the same size as the sun during eclipses.
In Buddhism, there are said to be 108 earthly desires in mortals, 108 lies humans tell and 108 human delusions. In Yoga, 108 Sun Salutations are often practiced to honor change. For example, to bring peace, respect and understanding at a time of tragedy or to honor the change of seasons.
- According to traditional Buddhism, 108 represents the number of mortal desires of mankind which one must overcome to achieve Nirvana. - Mala Beads are often used as a meditation tool. For this purpose, there are 108 beads so that a mantra can be recited 100 times as you move your fingers along the beads.
According to Vedic cosmology, 108 is the basis of creation, represents the universe and all our existence. In Hinduism, we believe that outer cosmology should mirror our inner spirituality because our ultimate realization is that we are one in the same.
The five principal kleshas, which are sometimes called poisons, are attachment, aversion, ignorance, pride, and jealousy.
In his early teachings, the Buddha identified “three poisons,” or three fires, or three negative qualities of the mind that cause most of our problems—and most of the problems in the world. The three poisons are: greed (raga, also translated as lust), hatred (dvesha, or anger), and delusion (moha, or ignorance).
108 represent divine trinity of time where 1 is singularity of present, o is nothingness of past and 8 is infinity of future. The distance between the Earth and the Sun is 108 times the diameter of the Sun and the distance between the Earth and Moon is 108 times the diameter of the Moon.
Buddha said very clearly that humans have five main desires: food, sleep, sex, money, fame. As we grow these five desires all become stronger.
Although widespread in both Hinduism and Buddhism, the roots of 108 as a significant and sacred number are likely earlier. There is evidence that 108 was of special significance in Sumer, an ancient civilization seated along the Euphrates River in Mesopotamia over 5000 years ago.
The number 108 is sacred in mathematics, geometry, astrology, numerology and in many world religions and spiritual traditions. There are exactly 108 sacred sites (also called pithas) all over India. There are 108 Upanishads, and there are 108 Marmas with regard to Ayurveda.
The five crimes or sins are: Injuring a Buddha. Killing an Arhat. Creating schism in the society of Sangha.
The diameter of the Sun: 864,000 miles. The distance between the earth and the Sun: 864,000 x 108 = 93,000,000 miles. The space between the Sun and Earth is filled with 108 Suns. So 108 represents the universe.
“Three things cannot be long hidden: the sun, the moon, and the truth” – Gautama Buddha.
The Moon illusion is an optical illusion which causes the Moon to appear larger near the horizon than it does higher up in the sky. It has been known since ancient times and recorded by various cultures. The explanation of this illusion is still debated.
More than just jewelry, malas are powerful and culturally-rich tools for meditation. We don't believe you need to be religious or have a spiritual practice to wear mala beads—you can simply wear them as a reminder of personal intention you've set, or when seeking a calmer mind, body, and spirit.
Left or Right. A mala bracelet or wrapped necklace may be worn on whichever wrist feels most comfortable to you. There are no set rules on which wrist is most appropriate. In India, some cultural practices unrelated to mala beads would suggest you wear them on the right wrist.
David, the writer of these psalms, shares three different thoughts. Allow me to give a brief summary of each chapter and with an application for you to consider in each. In Psalm 108, David teaches us how to praise God.
