The Endless are a somewhat dysfunctional family of seven siblings who each represent an aspect of life: Dream, Death, Destiny, Despair, Desire, Delirium and Destruction.
Destiny, the eldest of the Endless, is one of the most powerful and influential of his siblings. As the ultimate observer, Destiny is the personification of fate and is generally all-knowing.
From oldest to youngest they are: Destiny, Death, Dream, Destruction, Desire, Despair, and Delirium, who was previously known as Delight.
The Endless: Destruction Is the Missing Prodigal
The Endless, in order of appearance in the universe, are Destiny, Death, Dream, Destruction, twins Desire and Despair, and Delirium, who was once known as Delight. The seven are much more than mere gods: they are personifications of core aspects of conscious existence.
The Endless, also known as the Perpetuals, are the seven children of Father Time and the Darkness. They are humanoid personifications that embody the primordial concepts, aspects of creation such as dream, delirium, destiny and destruction, among others.
Destiny: The oldest of the Endless, Destiny appears as a blind man dressed in grey or brown robes (purple in earlier comics), carrying a large book, the Cosmic Log. The book is chained to him, or he is chained to the book, and within the book is written the entire sum of existence, past, present and future.
Father Time is the personification of Time and rules over his domain. Time is the father to the Endless and with his partner Night, made all of Creation possible. However, in present times, Time and Night are separated and estranged from their families.
The prodigal brother of the Endless family, Destruction left his post because he didn't want to be responsible for the chaos humanity would bring upon itself when it turned to science. Because destruction is what happens when dreams get subverted to evil ends.
Powers. Personification of Dreams: As one of the seven Endless, inconceivably powerful beings, Dream is both the lord and personification of all dreams and reality. He possesses absolute control over sleep, dreams, nightmares, and even insomnia.
Mother Night is a cosmic being introduced in The Sandman: Overture, the embodiment of the absolute emptiness that predates creation. She is revealed to be the mother of The Endless with her consort, Time.
More than a mere personification of abstract concepts, each Endless is the idea itself, making them immune to death or destruction. While even god can be slain, a fallen Endless is merely replaced by another version of itself because the universe cannot function without these concepts.
Dream is without question one of the strongest characters in The Sandman universe thanks to his powerful and varied abilities and also because he is more than willing to act on his power. Dream is so powerful that he is even willing to venture into Hell itself to confront Lucifer Morningstar when the need arises.
Destruction Is the Only Sandman Endless to Abandon His Duties. Also known as Olethros, or the Prodigal, Destruction is the only one of the Endless to have abandoned their duties, having left his realm over 300 years ago.
The Endless are each the seven children of even older entities, known as Mother NightOpens in new tab and Father TimeOpens in new tab. Destiny was born first, followed by Death, then Dream, Destruction, the twins known as Desire and Despair, and finally, Delirium, the youngest.
In the series, the Corinthian displays his talent for possessing the bodies of the living, a process which causes the possessed body's hair to turn white and the eye sockets to bleed as the eyes are replaced (possibly eaten) by the Corinthian's teeth.
7. Delirium. The least powerful of the Endless is poor Delirium, who was once Delight.
The seven siblings are Dream, Despair, Desire, Death, Destruction, Delirium, and Destiny, and "The Sandman" comics eventually show them all in some manner,...
Dream was one of the seven Endless, powerful beings that are older than gods. He went by countless names; such as Oneiros, Morpheus and Sandman. He was the personification, as well as the lord over all dreams and reality. After his death, his power passed to Daniel Hall, who became the new incarnation of Dream.
The things in The Endless don't actually exist, but they seem to be within the realm of possibility. That idea of a haunted geology was also inspired by Stephen King's Desperation.
The Endless are also forbidden from spilling their family's blood. If they break these rules, they risk their own destruction.
In the comic books, Azazel is one of three co-rulers of Hell, alongside Lucifer and the as-yet-unseen Beelzebub. Inspired by a demon mentioned in the Bible, Azazel is depicted as a disembodied jumble of menacing eyes and sharp-toothed mouths, who communicates through a dark, jagged rift in space.
Despair was one of the Endless, personifications of ideas and concepts that were tied to life, and were fated to fulfill their functions until the universe ended and all life disappeared from the cosmos. The original Despair was killed by a man, and a new personification of Despair came into existence.
In total there are seven members of The Endless, but only four of them appear in the first season of The Sandman: Dream, Death (Kirby Howell-Baptiste), Desire (Mason Alexander Park) and Despair (Donna Preston).
In The Sandman comics she is not precisely an angel per se but actually one of The Endless. The Endless are personifications of aspects of sentient life and cousins of the angels (according to the message Cain delivers to Lucifer in Season of mists).
Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Death
Despite her name, Death is quite kind, wise, down-to-earth, and most importantly, Morpheus's sister, with whom she has a strong bond. As an Endless, her role is to meet with the recently deceased of the waking world and guide them into the afterlife.
