Smoking causes inflammation in the small airways and tissues of your lungs, causing your chest to feel tight. It also makes you feel short of breath and wheezy. This inflammation builds up the more you smoke and can turn to scar tissue that provokes physical changes in your airways and lungs.
Your lungs are self-cleaning, which means they will gradually heal and regenerate on their own after you quit smoking. However, there are certain lifestyle behaviors you can practice to try and accelerate the rate at which your lungs heal.
Background: Heavy smokers (those who smoke greater than or equal to 25 or more cigarettes a day) are a subgroup who place themselves and others at risk for harmful health consequences and also are those least likely to achieve cessation.
A chest X-ray is a fast and painless imaging test to look at the structures in and around your chest. This test can help diagnose and check conditions such as pneumonia, heart failure, lung cancer, tuberculosis, sarcoidosis, emphysema, and lung tissue scarring, called fibrosis.
Symptoms include shortness of breath or feeling like you can't get enough air, extreme tiredness, an inability to exercise as you did before, and sleepiness.
Feeling like you're not getting enough air: Labored breathing, when it's hard to breath in and out, is a warning sign of trouble. Chronic cough: Coughing for more than a month, may be a signal that something is wrong with your respiratory system.
Your lung function improves within two weeks to three months after the last cigarette. During the first year after quitting, coughing and shortness of breath decrease, and your lungs become better at cleaning themselves to reduce the risk of infection.
“And since people start out with millions of alveoli, it can take 15 or 20 years to lose enough of them to really become obvious. While lung tissue cells do regenerate, there's no way a smoker can return to having the lungs of a non-smoker. At best, they will carry a few scars from their time smoking, and at worst, they're stuck with certain breathing difficulties for the rest of their lives.
Heavy smokers have a typical smell of smoke in their clothes, breath, hands, and can easily be detected by this smell. The smell may vary depending on the type of cigarette they use. So, if in doubt regarding the history using your smelling power may be worthwhile, especially in adolescents.
Green tea
Green tea contains many antioxidants that may help reduce inflammation in the lungs. These compounds may even protect lung tissue from the harmful effects of smoke inhalation.
You may need this test if you: Have symptoms of a breathing problem such as shortness of breath, wheezing, and/or coughing. Have a chronic lung disease. Have been exposed to asbestos or other substances known to cause lung damage.
You can do a little checking yourself with a stopwatch. Take a full breath; hold if for one second. Then, with your mouth open, blow out as hard and fast as you can. Your lungs should be completely emptied – meaning that you can blow no more air out even though you try– in no more than 4 to 6 seconds.
After 15 years of having quit smoking, the likelihood of developing coronary heart disease is the equivalent of a non-smoker. Similarly, the risk of developing pancreatic cancer has reduced to the same level as a non-smoker.
“In addition to all of the benefits we've already mentioned, your risk of dying from lung cancer is now about half the amount it was when you were smoking,” Dr. Rizk says. “Your cancer risk is also decreased for pancreatic cancer and for cancer of the larynx.”
