One night, Sir Agravain and Sir Modred, King Arthur's nephew, led a band of 12 knights to Guinevere's chamber where they burst in upon the lovers. Discovered, Sir Lancelot made a fighting escape, but poor Guinevere was not so lucky. She was seized and condemned to burn to death for her adultery.
At the same time, however, Guinevere herself had summoned Lancelot and is enraged to discover that he is not in his bedchamber. She hears him talking in his sleep, and finds him in bed with Elaine. Guinevere is furious with him and tells him she never wants to see him again.
When Lancelot fights in the tournament, Guinevere asks him to lose in order to prove his love. He obliges, but when he begins to intentionally throw the battle, Guinevere changes her mind, now instructing him to win instead.
At one point, he goes mad when he is led to believe that Guinevere doubts his love until he is found and healed by the Lady of the Lake. Another instance of Lancelot temporarily losing his mind occurs during his brief imprisonment by Camille, after which he is cured by the Lady of the Lake as well.
In the medieval legends about King Arthur of Britain and his knights, Lancelot is the greatest knight of all. In time, however, Lancelot's love for Guinevere (pronounced GWEN-uh-veer), the king's wife, leads him to betray his king and sets in motion the fatal events that end Arthur's rule.

But in some medieval versions of the Arthurian legend, Arthur himself is not quite so chaste and honourable as popular culture tends to imagine.
Some contemporary versions of her story for younger readers attempt to rescue her from the role of victim and make her a more active figure. Elaine of Astolat, a character closely related to the Lady of Shalott, is an innocent maiden who falls deeply in love with Sir Lancelot.
In Monmouth's Historia Regum Britanniae, Guinevere betrays Arthur by helping his nephew Mordred usurp her husband's throne. She then rules by his side until Arthur returns to fight Mordred to the death. Widowed, she escapes to a nunnery, where she lives out the rest of her days in shame and seclusion.
Well, in the first place, the marriage of Guinevere and Arthur was an arranged marriage. Not based on love, though they did come to care for one another. But Guinevere fell head over heels in love with Lancelot and he with her. In those days, to commit adultery against the King was high treason, punishable by death.
He kisses Guinevere when unbidden and unwanted, he shows Arthur little respect in their first meeting together, and he cries at one point when he feels that Guinevere will never requite his love. The Lancelot of old would die of shame if he knew what he had been turned into.

Did King Arthur forgive Lancelot? Lancelot immediately bowed to the king and begged forgiveness. Arthur laughed, and said he'd heard that Lancelot was on his way to Camelot, and came to meet him to test his skills. Arthur said Lancelot had nothing to be sorry for, and knighted him on the spot.
One of these knights was Sir Lancelot. He was Arthur's best friend. But unfortunately, Lancelot was also in love with King Arthur's wife, Guinevere. And because Lancelot was the best looking and most chivalrous knight in the kingdom, Guinevere couldn't resist his allure.
Modred spies on them and informs Arthur of his wife's infidelity. Lancelot escapes, but Guinevere is condemned to be burned at the stake. He returns in time to save her and then offers to give himself up provided there will be no retaliation.
This is in reference to the scene in which Lancelot and Guinevere are caught in their love by Sir Mordred, although Lancelot, ever the noble knight, denies the allegations of treason that are levied upon him.
Lancelot is a noble and honorable man, whose reputation is sullied only by his sinful relationship with Guinevere. He often feels acute guilt and shame about his adultery and his infidelity to Arthur, and he frequently makes strong but unsuccessful efforts to untangle himself from the influence of evil.
Guinevere is often portrayed as being at least a few years older than Lancelot—and notably childless. A succession crisis is looming on the horizon. Arthur has a nephew (sometimes a son with his half-sister), but no legitimate heirs through Guinevere.
