The number “10” is a size designator with no numerical meaning. The number “32” refers to 32 threads per inch. You can identify a 10-32 screw by measuring the diameter at exactly 3/16″ (4.76 mm).
10-5 = Relay this information to (name of a person, officer, etc.) 10-36 = What is the correct time of day? 10-42 = End of watch.

10-4 is an affirmative signal: it means “OK.” The ten-codes are credited to Illinois State Police Communications Director Charles Hopper who created them between 1937–40 for use in radio communications among cops.
Inch thread sizes are specified by diameter and threads per inch. Diameter is also known as screw size. For those with a diameter smaller than 1/4", screw size is indicated by a number (e.g., #10 or No. 10). For example, a 10-24 screw has 0.190" thread diameter and has 23 threads per inch.
The number “12” is a size designator. The number “24” refers to 24 threads per inch. You can identify a 12-24 screw by measuring the diameter with a ruler at slightly less than 7/32″ (slightly larger than 3/16″ or 0.216″).
The standard metric rack screw is called M6 x 1. The 'M' means it's metric. The '6' is the outside diameter measured in millimeters, and the '1' is the distance between adjacent threads, also in millimeters. Metric threads are used outside of the USA, and commonly in products by HP and other global entities.
It's a question that can be answered easily, actually. We took inspiration from CB Radio slang. In fact, the following is from CBSlang.com: If you hear a truck driver say “10-20” on their CB radio, it's just another way to say “Your current location.”

A 3/8"-16 screw is a machine screw, the "3/8" is the diameter and the "16" is the number of threads per inch. This screw will thread into a nut or threaded hole.
The first number is the diameter. The bigger the number the bigger the screw. The second number is the number of threads per inch.
10/32 is slightly smaller in diameter than M5. You can use a 10/32 screw in an M5 nut pretty safely.
The M means Metric, the 14 stands for 14mm thread diameter, and finally the 1.5 is the thread pitch, again in mm. The thread pitch is the distance from one peak to the next (see figure below). The most common metric bolt sizes are: M12x1.5, M12x1.25, M12x1.75, M14x1.5, M14x1.25, M14x2.0.
just to clarify, 10-8 means 10guage and 8TPI (threads per inch) so its telling you how coarse or fine the threadform is. The thinner head screws are generally referred to as trimheads (example) and are usually 316 stainless to keep them strong and compensate for the slender profile.
Machine screws are often found in sizes of: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14—the larger the number, the larger the screw.

Have you ever heard someone ask, “What's your 20?” The term refers to your location. It comes from “10–20” and is part of the Ten Code used by CB radioers, who borrowed and adapted it from the police and emergency services. It seems appropriate to use this question to kick off my first column in the year 2020.
