It's not your imagination — red hair dye does fade faster than other hair color shades.
Seeing Red
You're not imagining things. When exposed to water, all dye molecules diffuse out of the hair a bit. But, since red ones are smaller than brown or black molecules, they slip away faster (blondes don't have to worry about shade fade – bleaching removes melanin altogether, so there's no hue to lose).
The most durable hair colours are brown permanent colours. What Hair Colour Fades Most Rapidly? Red hair colours, particularly intense and brilliant red tints, fade the quickest. Choose auburn or red-brown tones of red if you want a longer-lasting red hair colour.
“Red is the hardest color to keep lustrous and the hardest color to remove,” she adds.
What are the most difficult hair colors to maintain? Red hair is notoriously difficult when it comes to upkeep. While it's the hardest color to fully strip from your hair, it's also the first to fade, often lightening drastically within the first few washes.
Red is the rarest hair color, according to Dr. Kaplan, and that's because so few MC1R variants are associated with the shade. “Only three variants are associated with red hair,” she says.
Red hair does, in fact, fade more quickly than most other hues. This is because the red colour molecule is bigger than those of all other hues. The molecule cannot penetrate a sufficient depth in the cortex because of its size. The molecule thus remains on the surface and disappears with each wash.
Whites and lighter neutrals are going to get you the most fade-resistant results. But if you want to go with a color, choosing a lighter shade will improve reflectivity and slow fading over time.
More neutral colours like tan, beige, brown, and various shades of white fade the least over time. Compared to brighter pigments like red, blue, and yellow, these and other milder earth tones tend to degrade far more gradually in UV radiation and harsh weather.
Purple hair dye fades faster than many other colors, including red and blue. This is because the purple dye molecules aren't able to penetrate the hair shaft deeply, leaving them vulnerable to external influences.
A permanent dye lasts the longest, and re-applying every 6 to 8 weeks is safe. Permanent hair coloring lightens and colors the hair.
It fades fast.
I didn't realize that even though I dyed my hair blue, those strands would spend the majority of their lifetime green. Within a month, the hair was teal, and within in two months, it was a pastel green. Red dye is also notoriously short-lived, turning to copper and orange, says Kiyah.
Shampooing Too Often After Coloring
All colored hair has an expiration date. Depending on whether your dye is temporary or permanent, your color may last anywhere from 6 to 30 washes. For those who wash their hair multiple times a day or week, this means your hair color may fade faster.
Mid brown hair has orange underlying pigment. Your hair can start out a beautiful cool mid brown shade and slowly through washing, those orange tones can start to peak through. Its the same for the darker brown tones except you will see more of a red colour coming through.
White. White is, of course, always a good paint choice, because it feels elegant, fresh and clean. Plus, Gibbons says, “black and white are the most timeless colors you'll find anywhere and the most timeless color combination.”
BLUE. One of the most popular colors in the U.S. is blue. A preppy classic and never out of style, blue is a perfect color for a timeless look. Blues are soothing and navy blue is especially complementary to most hard and soft furnishings.
Although the color itself doesn't determine how much it fades, the darker the color the more noticeable fading becomes sooner. Navy blue, dark green, dark red, dark brown and black will appear to fade faster because they are deeper into the color spectrum than white, tan or other lighter colors.
How long does permanent hair dye generally last? Permanent hair dye typically lasts for between four to eight weeks before it grows out or fades (more on that below).
It will turn green
Blue hair will eventually fade into green. It's hard to avoid it but it is easy to fix. A simple purple shampoo will do the trick and put the green at bay. Just wash your blue hair with purple shampoo every time it starts to turn green.
Unfortunately, pink hair fades fast, so you will need to stay on top of the upkeep. Schulz recommends having at-home products that can keep the color looking fresh.
The contest for the most attractive hair colour is obviously won by the blonde color with 35% of the overall vote, followed by the brunette. The bronze goes to Pippi Longstocking (people 30 and above will understand 👩 ). And the fourth place is for black hair colour.
That's right, honey is the most universally flattering shade of hair color out there—whether it's more honey blonde or more honey brown. Honey blonde is a warm, sunny, medium-to-dark blonde that's closer to light brunette than it is to platinum.
