One of the most loved street food dishes is anything on skewers, especially grilled ayu, or sweetfish, and ika, or squid. Ayu are small fish in the salmon family, and when heavily salted, skewered and grilled over an open charcoal fire, they are considered a delicacy reminiscent of summertime, camping and festivals.
The name Ayu is both a boy's name and a girl's name of African origin meaning "joy".

The classic way to eat ayu at this time is shioyaki – salted and grilled. It's delectable and will leave you smacking your lips for more. Again, the whole fish can be consumed, but most people will remove the flesh from the bones, and leave the head and tail. The organs can be bitter, so some people avoid those too.

Etymology and derivation
The word Ayu is derived from prefix aa (आ) upasarga and yujiryoge (युजिर्योगे) dhatu. Thus the etymology of ayu आसमन्तात्चेतनयायुनक्तिइतिआयुः| means ayu is the one that connects to consciousness from beginning to end.
Ayu was born in Gboko in Benue State.
