Mesalamine, a 5-aminosalicylic acid is an anti-inflammatory drug and extensively used for treating inflammatory bowel disease. The presence of low-grade inflammation and mucosal immune activation in IBS provides the rationale for using mesalamine in IBS patients.
Try slowly increasing the amount of fiber in your diet over a period of weeks with foods such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables and beans. A fiber supplement might cause less gas and bloating than fiber-rich foods. Avoid problem foods. Eliminate foods that trigger your symptoms.
“I sometimes tell patients to stay away from ibuprofen (like Advil® or Motrin®) and naproxen (like Aleve®) because they can cause stomach discomfort,” says Dr. Tosch. “Over long periods of time, they can cause ulcers. If you need something for pain, Tylenol® (acetaminophen) is the best option.”
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are often prescribed for the pain associated with IBS, but they may exacerbate symptoms. Paracetamol does not upset IBS.
Buscopan relieves painful stomach cramps, including those linked with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). It can also help bladder cramps and period pain. Buscopan contains the active ingredient hyoscine butylbromide.
The pain in IBS is related to a change in the part of the brain that receives signals from the gut, which “turns up the volume” on sensations. Most people's IBS symptoms will flare-up for 2-4 days, after which your symptoms may lower in severity or disappear completely. Many people experience IBS in waves, in which symptoms may come and go over several days or weeks.

Conventional analgesic drugs, such as paracetamol, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and opiates are unlikely to relieve pain in IBS, and some have the potential to exacerbate gastrointestinal symptoms.

For cramping from diarrhea, medicines that have loperamide (Imodium) or bismuth subsalicylate (Kaopectate or Pepto-Bismol) might make you feel better. For other types of pain, acetaminophen (Aspirin Free Anacin, Liquiprin, Panadol, Tylenol) might be helpful.
Certain grains: Gluten-free oatmeal and brown rice are usually well-received by people with IBS and provide soluble fiber, which helps regulate bowel movements. Low-fat yogurt: Some people with IBS have worse symptoms after eating dairy foods.
