Anticonvulsant drugs may cause low levels of calcium, vitamin D, and vitamin K. If you take anticonvulsant drugs, ask your doctor about taking a supplement. Calcium can interfere with anticonvulsant drugs. So DO NOT take calcium without your doctor's supervision.
Seizures caused by vitamin B6 deficiency in adults may result from dietary deficiency, liver disease, pregnancy and certain medications and can be easily treated by vitamin B6 with excellent outcome.
Moreover, magnesium is a well-known anticonvulsive agent, and studies show that magnesium deficiency is associated with epilepsy; intravenous magnesium can effectively control different types of seizures as well.
(2015) [15] have demonstrated through a case report that vitamin B12 deficiency, along with high folate level, caused generalized tonic-clonic seizure in a human patient. These findings have been supported by the reduction of seizure episodes after vitamin B12 supplementation and folate normalization.
The study included the following results: 10 of the 13 participants experienced fewer seizures with vitamin D supplements. 2 of the 13 experienced more seizures and 1 had no change. 5 of the 13 experienced a 50% or greater reduction in overall seizures from baseline.
Brain Function
B12 is a key nutrient for nervous system health. It is important for producing serotonin and dopamine, which are mood-enhancing neurotransmitters. As a result, vitamin B12 can help to prevent and treat depression and anxiety. It can improve focus and memory as well.
Generally speaking, most people with epilepsy should be OK to drink coffee, tea, soda and other caffeinated drinks in small quantities without any serious risk of increasing the number of seizures they have.
Bananas and seizures
One of the things your body uses potassium for is to help with sending electrical signals in the brain. There is some evidence that having too much potassium in the brain could be a seizure trigger. However, if you just have one banana per day, this is unlikely to put you at an increased risk.
Fruits and Vegetables : To increase your antioxidant intake, incorporate a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables, such as berries, cherries, citrus fruits, tomatoes, spinach, kale, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts, into your diet regularly.
Missed medication, lack of sleep, stress, alcohol, and menstruation are some of the most common triggers, but there are many more. Flashing lights can cause seizures in some people, but it's much less frequent than you might imagine.
There are many possible causes of epilepsy, including an imbalance of nerve-signaling chemicals called neurotransmitters, tumors, strokes, and brain damage from illness or injury, or some combination of these. In the majority of cases, there may be no detectable cause for epilepsy.
Stimulants such as tea, coffee, chocolate, sugar, sweets, soft drinks, excess salt, spices and animal proteins may trigger seizures by suddenly changing the body's metabolism. Some parents have reported that allergic reactions to certain foods (e.g. white flour) also seem to trigger seizures in their children.
A low glycemic index diet focuses on foods with a low glycemic index, meaning they affect blood glucose levels slowly, if at all. Although it's not understood why, low blood glucose levels control seizures in some people. Foods on this diet include meat, cheese, and most high-fiber vegetables.
The child should take about 250 ml. of the juice of fresh grapes thrice a day for three months. It will provide immense relief and help in the cure of the disease. Certain vegetable juices , especially carrot juice in combination with juices of beats and cucumber have also been found valuable in epilepsy.
On the other hand, several studies represent full-fat milk or higher fat dairy products as an effective anti-inflammatory factor which elevate seizure threshold.
Treatment. The two emergency medications used to prevent status in the community (outside of the hospital setting) are midazolam and diazepam: Buccal (oromucosal) midazolam – is given into the buccal cavity (the side of the mouth between the cheek and the gum). Rectal diazepam – is given rectally (into the bottom).
Take medication
Benzodiazepines are the most common type of rescue medication for seizures. If a person is awake and alert before the seizure starts, it may be safe to take lorazepam or diazepam orally if a doctor has prescribed it as a recommended plan of action.
Vitamin B9, or folate, is a popular supplement and a key vitamin for supporting brain and neurological health, optimal neurotransmitter function, and balanced psychological health.
B Vitamins
When it comes to brain health, focus on the three B's : vitamins B6, B12, and B9 (folate). “These three types of B vitamins are necessary for the brain's normal functioning,” says Dr. Agarwal, “and any deficiency in them may increase the risk of memory loss and other forms of cognitive decline.”
Like vitamin D, vitamin B12 has so many mental benefits. Getting enough vitamin B12 may give you more energy, improve memory, and make learning new things easier. It also has been shown to help improve mood and lessen depressive symptoms.
Zinc ions dampen the neurotransmitters' effect by also binding to NMDA receptors and blocking some of them. In this way, zinc ions prevent seizure.
