The best known of his pet dogs is Lump the dachshund. The relationship between artist and dog was described as a 'love affair' and Lump appears in a number of Picasso's paintings. He lived with Picasso until a week before the artist's death in 1973.
Lump (1956 – 29 March 1973), was a Dachshund owned by David Douglas Duncan who lived with artist Pablo Picasso for six years, and featured in several of his works.
Picasso depicted goats in many different mediums and always with extreme care. He clearly had a personal connection with the animal in particular, as he had a pet goat himself which he named Esmeralda.
Estimate $25,000,000–30,000,000. PROPERTY FROM A PRIVATE COLLECTION, JAPAN. The titular dog in Femme au chien, his Afghan hound Kaboul, is rendered with clear affection and humor – a nod to Picasso's adoration of these creatures.
Picasso once said, 'Lump, he's not a dog, he's not a little man, he's somebody else. ' Picasso had many dogs, but Lump was the only one he took in his arms.” In April 1973, Mr. Duncan lost two dear friends almost simultaneously: Lump died one week before Picasso.
Picasso loved animals of all kinds. His particular bestiary consisted of birds – doves, roosters and owls – as well as dogs, cats, bulls, horses and goats, all of which appear repeatedly in his works. He also subjected these creatures to constant metamorphoses, giving them symbolic meanings.
Yes, Lump the Dachshund is said to have been "the only animal Picasso took in his arms." But clearly Picasso had a great fondness for other breeds too, especially Afghans. As far as I can tell he owned three in his lifetime; Kabul, Kasbec, and Sauterelle. Here are some photos.
A depiction of a dog has been discovered underneath layers of paint in an early Pablo Picasso masterpiece, more than 120 years after it was first created. The animal was hidden underneath a patch of dark paint in Le Moulin de la Galette, completed by the Spanish artist when he was 19 years old in 1900.
The painting was sold privately for $155 million on March 26, 2013, and is known for its contrasted colours and oversimplified outlines as it belongs to Picasso's period of distorted depictions.
Kahlo's furry companion is her pet spider monkey, Fulang-Chang, whom she adored for his childlike and playful nature. She was haunted by a desire to have children and looked for comfort in her many exotic pets.
But Picasso also had a personal connection to the nocturnal predator. He kept many birds in his own home, and during one period that veritable bestiary included an owl.
Pablo Picasso loved cats and they found their way into many of his paintings and drawings.
Warhol was such a devoted dog lover that he refused to travel to London in the early 1970s because it would require leaving his beloved dachshund Archie behind or subjecting him to quarantine for six months, so it's no surprise that he took many photos of the dogs he encountered.
Picasso, giant of art, dies at 91
He was 91 and had been ill for some weeks. A doctor called from the small village of Mougins, near Cannes, early in the morning said: “It was already too late when I arrived.” The cause of death was given as lung congestion.
Andy and Archie
Andy Warhol, previously a cat lover and author of “25 Cats Name Sam and One Blue Pussy” was persuaded to get a dog by his boyfriend Jed Johnson. They adopted a short haired dachshund puppy and named him Archie. Warhol was smitten. He took Archie to his studio, to art openings, and even to restaurants.
The dog, covered by a brown mark, was found to be a Cavalier King Charles spaniel wearing a red bow. In Picasso's painting Le Moulin de la Galette from the year 1900, a brown paint stroke can be seen partially covering a chair.
Pablo Picasso and Vincent Van Gogh never met. The Spanish painter discovered the Dutchman's work in Paris aged 19, when he was paying visits to independent salons. But an exercise in historical fiction leads one to surmise that had they met, they would not have gotten along.
Although many have cared for and found inspiration in Dachshunds, few artists have forged such a strong bond with a Weenie as Spanish painter Pablo Picasso with a dog named Lump.

Picasso's affair with Marie-Thérèse began in 1927 and lasted for nearly a decade, making it one of his longest relationships. However, his wife Olga did not discover the affair until much later when a friend told her that Picasso was expecting a child with his long-time lover.
In the summer of 1932, Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) was in love. Not with his wife, the fractious and increasingly unstable Russian ballerina Olga, but with a young woman of 22 called Marie-Thérèse Walter (1909-1977). They met by chance outside the Galeries Lafayette in 1927, and soon became lovers.
