No other dog dewormer kills as many different types of worms as Drontal Plus. Drontal Plus is a safe and effective broad-spectrum dewormer that eliminates multiple types of parasites with one dose. It kills tapeworms, hookworms, roundworms, and whipworms within seven days.
Deworming medications (antihelmintics) are used to rid pets of intestinal worms. No single dewormer removes all types of worms, but many deworming products are effective for more than one type.
Treating your dog with a broad spectrum intestinal dog worming tablets every 3 months is essential. We recommend Drontal Allwormer, Paragard or Endogard dog worming tablets. Puppies should be wormed every 2 weeks until 12 weeks old and then once a month until 6 months.
Many deworming drugs are safe and effective. They include fenbendazole, milbemycin, moxidectin, piperazine, and pyrantel. Your vet will give your dog one to three doses at first, which will kill the adult worms.
Many veterinarians recommend Panacur C, which contains fenbendazole as the active ingredient. It's effective against the most common species of hookworms, roundworms, tapeworms, and whipworms. It's safe for dogs six weeks and older and pregnant and lactating pups.
Ivermectin is effective against most common intestinal worms (except tapeworms), most mites, and some lice. It is not effective against fleas, ticks, flies, or flukes.
Ivermectin is effective against heartworms and many gastrointestinal worms. It has a varying efficacy against external parasites. It is sometimes combined with other medications to treat a broad spectrum of animal parasites.
Adult dogs
A worming treatment every three months is usually enough to prevent problems from developing. It may be necessary to deworm your dog slightly more regularly if they scavenge a lot. Remember to protect your dog against lungworm as well as intestinal (gut) worms.
Coughing, diarrhea, vomiting and lethargy are the general signs the dog has worms. Other symptoms depend on the type of worm. For example, if your dog has a tapeworm, clear identifiers can be rapid weight loss or what appears to be grains of rice in their stool.
Most tapeworms do not produce obvious symptoms in dogs, other than worm segments on your dog's rear end or feces. Dogs can get tapeworms from fleas, mice, or other rodents. Flea control is an important step in protecting your dog from tapeworms. People rarely are affected by dog tapeworms.
What is the difference between Milbemax and Drontal? While very similar, Milbemax offers some advantages against Drontal. Milbemax dog wormer will treat or prevent a slightly broader spectrum of worms, including tapeworms, that Drontal does not.
Dosing Information of Ivermectin for Dogs and Cats
For dogs: Dose is 0.0015 to 0.003 mg per pound (0.003 to 0.006 mg/kg) once a month for heartworm prevention; 0.15 mg per pound (0.3 mg/kg) once, then repeat in 14 days for skin parasites; and 0.1 mg per pound (0.2 mg/kg) once for gastrointestinal parasites.
Mebendazole is a type of medicine for treating worms. It's used mainly for infections of the gut such as threadworms (sometimes known as pinworms) and other less common worm infections (whipworm, roundworm and hookworm). It works by stopping worms from using sugar (glucose) to live. This kills the worms.
Other intestinal worm infections are also treated with medicines that kill the parasite without harming the person, such as albendazole, mebendazole, ivermectin and praziquantel. Your doctor or a gastroenterologist will advise on the appropriate medicine and the dose. The worms are then usually passed out of the body.
For most people, treatment will involve taking a single dose of a medication called mebendazole to kill the worms. If necessary, another dose can be taken after 2 weeks. During treatment and for a few weeks afterwards, it's also important to follow strict hygiene measures to avoid spreading the threadworm eggs.
Treatment generally consists of a general dewormer and environmental cleaning. Indoors, the floor should be vacuumed and cleaned with an all-purpose cleaner. Litter boxes and bedding should be scrubbed and laundered. All animals in the house should be dewormed together to ensure all infected animals are treated.
Diarrhea, sometimes containing blood or mucus. Vomiting, which can sometimes contain adult worms. Weight loss, particularly if your dog has a good appetite. A bloated belly or generally “unhealthy” appearance.
How long does it take for worms to leave a dog? Puppies will usually poop worms for a couple of days as the parasites die off between 2 and 14 hours. However, it's not unusual for worms to still be pooped out for up to a week after deworming.
NO! People may believe because worms are usually harmless in humans, that they're probably not too dangerous in dogs either and that they can rid themselves of them, but this is not the case. Dogs cannot get rid of worms themselves. Medical assistance will be required to some extent.
The Deworming Process after a Few Days
You may be surprised to still see live worms in your dog's feces after deworming them, but this is normal. While this can be an unpleasant image, it's actually a good thing — it means the worms are no longer living inside your dog!
Typically, your dog's poop will be back to normal within a few days. Dead worms may be present in your dog's poop for up to a week after treatment. If you have any concerns, contact your veterinarian.
Some breeds of dogs (e.g., collies, sheepdogs, and collie- or sheepdog-cross breeds) are more sensitive to ivermectin than others. This is typically due to a specific genetic mutation (MDR1) that makes them less able to tolerate high doses of ivermectin.
Dogs are treated with deworming medications, usually administered twice – to catch the adult worms and then two-to-four weeks later to catch those that are newly developed.
This means that if one opts to treat a heartworm positive dog with an ivermectin heartworm preventive only, one can expect the dog to remain heartworm positive for a good 2 years and the heartworm disease will be progressing during that 2 years.
