As a pack animal, or as a “lone wolf,” the wolf is a perfect fit for Harry's Animagus form.
In the same book, it is also revealed that Harry's father, James Potter, was also an Animagus like his friends Sirius and Peter and took the form of a red stag.
The Animagus spell is very difficult and dangerous to perform, which is one reason that all Animagi are required to be registered by the Ministry of Magic. Another reason is so the Ministry can ensure that an Animagus does not use his or her power for any illegal purpose while in their animal forms.
Transfiguration and Animagi are different
Transfiguration is a form of spell-casting, whereas becoming an Animagus is forever. And yes, he could turn into a falcon.

In the Harry Potter books, only a few Animagi (registered and unregistered alike) are even mentioned. Lily's animagus form is a Doe, coupling with her husband, James Potter who is a Stag. Severus Snape's animagus is also a Doe.
Also one's Patronus and Animagus forms can be the same. So by that logic it is fairly plausible that Dumbledore's Animagus form could have been a Phoenix.
Any wizard with enough talent might be an animagus! And there is no question that Snape was a talented wizard, and that he could have become one if he had wanted to. But the fact is, there is not one single shred of evidence in Canon that Snape ever became an animagus.
At the end of GOF only a handful of people even know that Sirius is an animagus, let alone his loveable big doggie form. But by the beginning of OOTP we have Lucius Malfoy able to "recognize" Sirius by seeing the large black dog with Harry.
Peter Pettigrew's Animagus form was a rat. Colloquially, a "rat" is a snitch or informant. Webster's also lists the following possible definition: "a contemptible person: such as... one who betrays or deserts friends or associates."
Snape was angry, because he hates Sirius, and horrified at the prospect of having to work with him, and perhaps still of the opinion that Sirius was working for Voldemort. He wasn't shocked to learn that Sirius was an animagus; as you say, he already knew.
Draco's boggart would likely be in the form of the Grim Reaper with young Malfoy's own face under its hood. Surprisingly, Lord Voldemort was not Draco's greatest fear.
Talbott Winger was a wizard who attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in 1984 and was Sorted into Ravenclaw house. He was also an Animagus and took the form of an Eagle.

…in Transfiguration and Potions at least. Becoming an Animagus requires a witch or wizard to be skilled in both these areas in order to stand a chance of achieving such a complex transformation.
Voldemort was never given a reason to become an Animagus. We know his greatest desire is to be immortal, and being an Animagus would not help this. On the other hand, being an Animagus would not give him any special power in clearing his way to immortality. Killing curse is usually enough for him.
Summary: Basically, I read a fic (The Houses of Pendragon, Emrys and Potter), and in this fic, Merlin's animagus is a black dragon.

James Potter
James's Animagus form was that of a stag, which earned him his nickname, Prongs. Strikingly, Harry's Patronus was a stag and his mother Lily's was a doe, a female deer, showing that the family's characters were in harmony and formed part of the same animal group.
Madam Professor Minerva McGonagall (born 4 October 1935) was a witch and Animagus who attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry from 1947 to 1954 and was sorted into Gryffindor.
