The United States is leading the way in the increase in the number of male nurses. While the U.S. rate of men in nursing was not much higher than in Switzerland and Brazil in 1970, it rose rapidly over the next several decades and far surpassed these countries in addition to Portugal and Puerto Rico.
Nurse Anesthetists
Sometimes also referred to as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), this nursing professional is responsible for the administration of anesthesia, and related services, before, during, and after a medical procedure. Data shows that 41 percent of nurse anesthetists are men.
What is striking from the data is the high number of male nurses in Saudi Arabia. At 32% it is far higher than elsewhere in the world.
State numbers
Nebraska holds the distinction of being the state with the greatest percentage of male nurses, 20 percent. Iowa and North Dakota have the smallest percentage at 5 percent.
According to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data from 2023, men represent nearly 12% of all licensed practical nurses, registered nurses, and nurse practitioners. The percentage of nurses who are men has grown by 59% over the past 10 years.

From that point until the 1970s, men in nursing were on the decline and represented a tiny percentage of nursing professionals – just 2.7% of nurses in 1970 were male. However, the number of male nurses has risen since the 1970s. Today, the percentage of male nurses is over 13%.
There is no gender-specific name or title for a male nurse. Women and men in the field of nursing are all called “nurse.”
Female patients prefer to receive care from women. Male nurses appear not to maintain confidentiality and are often careless and thoughtless when providing basic care, but they are viewed as friendly, helpful, and better at management than women.

Results. In stepwise multivariable linear regression analysis, female nurses scored 1.93 points higher on caring than male nurses, after completely controlling for the other factors.

The healthcare industry in Australia is growing rapidly. It's expected that there will be around 26,300people employed as Enrolled Nurses by 2023. And if the rates of qualified male Enrolled Nurses don't increase, it means that by 2023 there will only be around 2360 male Enrolled Nurses employed around the country.
Yet, despite the obvious truth of this statement, male nurses on average earn higher salaries than female nurses in Australia. While the gender wage gap for nurses has diminished over time, it needs to close entirely. Currently, Australia's national gender pay gap is 14.2% [1].
