Compared to their Border counterparts, Collies are more laid-back and calmer. They appear to be content as family pets and thrive in homes with children. Border Collies are not unpleasant when taught and managed properly, but they have a strong drive to herd and nip, which can be difficult for young kids.
While they may be just as smart as Border Collies, Rough Collies typically are not as motivated as their extremely high-drive cousins.
Of the two Collie breeds, however, the Standard Collie requires less physical exercise than a Border Collie – a walk once or twice a day and a little playtime with the family will suffice, even for younger pups. The Border Collie, by contrast, is high-energy and wiry, built for fast turns and speed while herding.
Aussies are known for their frequent merle patterns while Border Collies are traditionally often black and white. The classic white marking around the neck, on the legs and in form of a blaze in the face are called “Irish Markings”. Border Collies' tails always have a white tip.
Collies are famously fond of children and make wonderful family pets. These swift, athletic dogs thrive on companionship and regular exercise. With gentle training, they learn happily and rapidly.
