Avoid lifting anything more than 20 pounds. That can stress the joint too much. Don't jerk the leg with the implant. Turn by taking small steps.
Effectiveness of total knee replacement
Many studies show that 90-95 percent of total knee replacements are still functioning well 10 years after surgery. Most patients walk without a cane, most can do stairs and arise from chairs normally, and most resume their desired level of recreational activity.
The metal parts of the implant are made of titanium- or cobalt-chromium-based alloys. The plastic parts are made of medical grade polyethylene. Some implants are made of ceramics or ceramic/metal mixtures such as oxidized zirconium. These implants typically weigh between 15 and 20 ounces.
Can I squat or kneel? Half squats for exercise are acceptable. Deep squatting is neither usually possible nor desirable after a knee replacement. Kneeling is not harmful but may not be comfortable.
In general, avoid sports that require jerking, twisting, pulling, or running. You should be able to do lower-impact activities, such as hiking, gardening, swimming, playing tennis, and golfing.
Even though you will be able to resume most activities, you may want to avoid doing things that place excessive stress on your "new" knee, such as participating in high-impact activities like jumping, jogging, or skiing.
The weight of the prosthesis will be more than the weight of the bone that is removed. The weight will vary according to your size, but in general may weigh one to two pounds. You will not notice the weight in your knee.
90 degrees is the same thing as a right angle. If you achieve 90 degrees by one week, and continue to push forward after this, you will end up with excellent range of motion of your knee replacement. Most of our patients end up with 120 to 125 degrees of flexion.
A total knee replacement patient is typically looking at a one year recovery period for things to fully settle down. I should stress that doesn't mean you'll be living with constant pain for a year. But the occasional twinge or moment of discomfort could well last 12 months. Occasionally it could be two years.
There is a range of accepted weight ranges, but the current standard is that anyone obese (greater than 100 pounds over ideal weight or a BMI of roughly 40-45) should not consider joint replacement.
The biggest challenge in the early recovery of a TKR (up to 3 months postoperative) is the regaining of knee motion. We will send a physical therapist to your house to help you with the walking, knee exercises, and gentle manipulation of the knee.

How Long Does The Stiffness Last? Knee stiffness is the second most common complication after a total knee replacement surgery, after pain. It is common for 2 weeks to 3 months following the surgery. This stiffness reduces as your knee gets adjusted to the implants.
Most patients can walk on their own roughly four to eight weeks after knee replacement.

Although exercise is the key to healing, you could be backpedaling progress by overworking your knee. Signs of over-exercising include swelling of the entire leg and lingering pain that stretches into the evening or into the next day.
Sleeping on the side can be painful because the leg is not straight enough. However, gradually, you can start sleeping on your side as the knee heals. But avoid sleeping on the operative side at all costs, as it puts a lot of pressure on the surgery site.
Researchers think there are two possible explanations to account for the weight gain. Patients who are overweight or obese may lose significant weight in advance of the surgery as recommended by their doctor. Then after the operation, they return to their old eating patterns and put the weight back on.
You may experience continued pain or discomfort and want to avoid kneeling. You also may be afraid of damaging the knee and its artificial components. The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) advises that kneeling is safe and won't harm the knee. It may, however, still feel painful or uncomfortable to kneel.

When Can I Do Housework? For the first three months following a TKR, stick to light chores such as washing up and dusting. Try to avoid standing for long periods e.g. ironing as it can cause your knee and ankles to swell. After three months you can return to other housework such as hoovering.
